VEuPathDB

All VEuPathDB Genomics Databases Are Offline

Current Status of VEuPathDB genomics databases

  • NIH funding for the Eukaryotic Pathogen, Host & Vector Bioinformatics Resource Center (VEuPathDB) ended on 14 Sept 2024, as NIAID has chosen to take the BRC program in other directions.
  • As a result, FungiDB, VectorBase, AmoebaDB, CryptoDB, GiardiaDB, MicrosporidiaDB, PiroplasmaDB, PlasmoDB, ToxoDB, TrichDB, TriTrypDB, and HostDB are currently inaccessible.

But there’s also good news

  • Donors concerned about the global impact of NIH’s decision have generously provided the funds necessary to bring VEuPathDB back online.
  • We are grateful for support from: The Foundation for the Advancement of Science & Medicine, Open Philanthropy, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, and the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Georgia.
  • We anticipate that VEuPathDB databases will be back online within 2-3 weeks, as a static resource, without the ability to integrate new data, and with limited outreach support.

Longer-term future

  • We have also received partial funding for a new business model & associated infrastructure enabling new database builds, but financial sustainability will depend upon additional support, likely involving a combination of grants and community buy-in.
  • This is an important topic, requiring frank discussion of costs, value, and what the community needs and is willing to support.
